How does the Vertform manhole base construction system work?

Shutter components are bolted together to form a channel between the two stub pipes. Side components are added to complete the mould. Vibrated concrete is poured around the shuttering, creating the channel and manhole base at the same time.

DS Watson Civil Engineering Ltd

Vertform was recently used for the first time by DS Watson Civil Engineering Ltd. We spoke to Contracts Manager Steve Groom to get his feedback on the system.

What job did you use the Vertform manhole construction system on?

"The job was in Blofield in Norfolk, where we had a number of manholes to form. Construction was split into two stages. In the first stage, we used Vertform to construct eight manholes over an 11 day period. They were 1,050mm diameter pipes, with some direction changes. We also used the rebate former for double step irons."

How did you find using the Vertform manhole construction system?

"We were pleased with how easy it was to use. We had a demonstrator from Ant Hire Solutions come to the site since it was our first time using it, but we had the equipment a couple of hours before he arrived. We were able to put the set together in about two hours using just the instruction manual, which wasn’t bad since none of us had used the system before.

"The guys on site liked it too, which is important – it’s no good if the managers decide we’re going use a new method if the people actually doing the work aren’t happy with it."

How did it compare to other manhole creation methods?

"We usually use timber shuttering and then bench to finish it off. We found that using Vertform was faster – we were getting a manhole done a day sometimes, which we weren’t expecting at the beginning of the project."

Would you use Vertform again?

"Yes – we’re very pleased with the system and we’ll be using it again."
