PIPE Data Management

Without pipeline pressure testing, the UK’s water network would be hugely inefficient given new sections of pipeline are regularly identified as containing leaks. Our Pipeline Installation Performance Evaluator (PIPE) provides contractors and utility companies with a comprehensive performance overview of the safety and compliance of completed pressure tests as well as insight by site and operator.

Pressure Testing Types

Hydrostatic pressure testing requires a pipeline to be exposed to water pressure levels above its normal operating pressure to determine whether there are any faults or weaknesses. This pressure test should be carried out for every new pipeline and all new sections of pipework laid in an existing system. If not undertaken safely and correctly, in line with industry best practice, a pressure test can be a highly dangerous activity.

Ant Hire Solution's extensive range of pipeline pressure testing equipment has been specially designed to cover all pipeline pressure tests, including Type 1, Type 2 and 10 minute pressure tests.

Our easy-to-use pumps, with capacities ranging from 6 litres to 530 litres per minute, data loggers and digital gauges have been designed and engineered by our in-house team to provide the best possible solutions and results.

Additionally, Ant Hire's expert analysts monitor pressure tests in real-time, ensuring pipeline leaks and air content safety threshold breaches can be identified and acted on as soon as they occur, saving time, money and improving operational safety and performance.

Designed for testing pipes made from Ductile Iron, Stainless Steel and Glass-Reinforced Plastic (GRP), the type 1 hydrostatic pressure test involves the measurement of volumes of water added (type 1a) to maintain the pressure over a test period, or volumes of water drawn off (type 1b) and measured after the system pressure has been replaced at the end of a test.

Hydrostatic pressure testing is required for all new polyethylene (PE) pressure pipelines and for all new sections of pressure pipework laid in an existing system. The type 2 test accounts for possibilities of creep or legitimate water loss. Tests involve pipelines being brought up to STP and left for at least an hour, the pressure is recorded and filtered through specially developed algorithms that can account for creep.

The 10-minute test is used in situations where a very short test time is required. It is suitable for testing PVC pipes laid with the pipe busting-technique. The test maintains pressure for 10 minutes and the amount of water added is recorded to indicate the pressure changes in the pipeline. Joints in the tested pipeline are to be visually inspected for leakage during this time.
